"We are not trying to make a game about Star Trek"
With this phrase Steve Sinclair started the presentation at E3 about, well, just his next game on Star Trek, project involving Canadians Digital Extremes, gi to work on The Darkness II, based on the second movie of J.J. Abrams dedicated to Kirk and associates. The release? Hopefully in 2012.
We really want to say that Sinclair with his statement to the effect that his studio chose to employ the same method used by Abrams for the 2009 reboot. According to the Director, the film had to be first, "a science fiction movie" and only after a Star Trek movie, extolling the pi action and spectacular at the expense of tones usually sober and calm of the saga. Not all hard and pure fans of Star Trek have praised the move, but the high value entertainment film, with a respectable cast, however, undeniable.
And although the scholars of the Federation and Klingon language turn up their noses, Digital Extremes has no intention of going through the same path, with the goal to take his title in the sad panorama of tie-ins. No rules of engagement or stellar strategy, Star Trek will be a fast-paced game and heavily set on co-op mode, with Kirk and Spock to settle their friendship when alive by a continuous series of battles with Phasers.
Like many successful tie-ins, such as The Chronicles of Riddick, the game does not make you a limiter repeat the same scene viewed on screen, but been filled the empty space between the two films by telling us a story built specifically to meet the dynamics of the game. In this regard, Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman, gi screenwriters for the film, are working closely with the God of War writer Marianne Krawczyk, to create an adventure that really worth being played.
Sinclair has described the game with the singular term "bro-op", a collaboration between sisterly, to emphasize the spirit of camaraderie, but also the misunderstandings at the base of the relationship between Kirk and Spock that led the developers to create a co-op strongly asymmetric.
Fortunately this is not only choice remained in intentions, but it resulted in a completely different gameplay depending on the character that you are going to use. Kirk and Spock, not only do I rely on different instruments, but also the tactics and roles that will cover will be absolutely different, level after level, and become increasingly complementary to proceed.
For this reason, although the title supporters a chance to participate in a match already begun by a friend, it will be impossible to Exchange roles and levels will be unlocked individually for both characters. Probably Digital Extremes is hoping that the game you like it so much, you want cos difficulty levels a second time from a different perspective.
